HOW ALEX RECEIVED A $3,500 SCHOLARSHIP AFTER SCORING 7.5 ON THE IELTS WITH 6 MONTHS OF PREPARATION

Achieving a high score on the IELTS exam can open many doors. This includes scholarships and prestigious educational programs. Our student, Alex, experienced this firsthand. He scored an impressive 7.5 on the IELTS exam. As a result, he successfully obtained a scholarship of $3,500 per year at a university in Canada.

In this article, we will explore Alex's preparation process. We will discuss the strategies he employed to pass the IELTS exam successfully. Additionally, we will highlight how his hard work led to significant financial support for his education.

Why Did Alex Decide to Take the IELTS?

Many Canadian educational institutions require an IELTS certificate with a score of 6.5 or higher for admission. At that time, Alex was working with his assistant, who helped him find programs abroad. During their collaboration, they discovered The University of British Columbia (UBC). They submitted an inquiry and clarified all the details.

It turned out that with a score of 7.5 or higher on the IELTS, along with a strong motivational letter, Alex could qualify for a partial scholarship. This scholarship would help him save $3,500 per year. Alex approached our school with the goal of achieving a band 7.5 in six months of preparation. His aim was to gain admission to the prestigious University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada.

Alex had no doubts about his choice of school for IELTS preparation. He came to us knowing he could not only improve his English level but also pass the exam on the first attempt.

Our systematic and high-quality training made this possible.

Alex's English Level Before Training
at Our School

Before starting our course, each student attends two meetings with the methodologist:

  • In the first meeting, the methodologist develops a preparation strategy for the IELTS exam. If a student needs to improve English level, we take that into account. After this consultation, students gain a clear understanding of the intensity and volume of the training.

  • The second meeting involves detailed testing. During this session, we assess the student's level across all criteria. Based on the results and the student's preferences, we create a personalized training plan. After this consultation, each student receives a file outlining all the necessary topics for completing the course.

During Alex's detailed assessment, we found the following:

  • Grammar: Alex's grammar was adequate for levels B1-B2.

However, he needed to confirm an Advanced level (IELTS band 7.5). To achieve this, it was essential to improve his grammar skills to demonstrate deeper knowledge on the IELTS exam.

Significant work was necessary, as some topics from levels B1-B2 had not been actively used. Alex had a solid grasp of 80-90% of the material, but he was lacking in 10-20%. Therefore, these gaps needed to be addressed, along with a thorough review of the Advanced level.

  • Vocabulary: Alex's vocabulary was at the B2 level

He actively used the necessary words for this level and could communicate on various topics. However, he faced challenges with topics that yield high scores in IELTS Writing Part 2 and Speaking Part 3.

While he could speak fluently on basic everyday topics, discussing more complex subjects proved significantly more difficult. These skills required further development.

  • Fluency: His fluency matched the B2 level.

To confirm a C1 level, we needed to work on both fluency and coherence. This would allow him to express his thoughts more clearly and in detail within a shorter time frame.

  • Pronunciation: Alex's pronunciation was also quite confident at the B2 level.

Comprehensive work was needed on vocabulary, coherence, and pronunciation to elevate all skills to a higher standard.

Having this English level, Alex could potentially pass the IELTS exam with a score of 6.0-6.5 by preparing with exam materials. However, if the goal is to achieve a score of 7.5, the approach must change significantly.

Any examiner will confirm that the difference between 6.5 and 7.0 on the IELTS exam is substantial. Although it may seem like only half a point, this gap represents significant work, as it indicates a transition from level B2 to C1.

Motivation: If a score of at least 7.5 is required, and a partial scholarship for tuition is the reward, the student's motivation increases three to four times.

When a student encounters difficulty in a specific part of the exam, we focus on improving the results in that area. At the same time, we pay special attention to the sections that come easier to them, ensuring they achieve a good overall score.

By leveraging both strengths and weaknesses, we tailor the ideal preparation path for each individual. This allows us to ensure the highest possible score based on their priorities.

Alex is a very responsible student. During the assessment, it was evident that he approached all parts of the exam with equal seriousness. He wanted to master every section well.

In this case, we emphasized all four parts of the exam equally and, of course, initially improved his English level.

Alex's Preparation Strategy: How to Achieve a High Score on the IELTS

The key to passing the IELTS exam is that you cannot achieve a score of 7.5 without reaching an Advanced level. Even with a confident Upper-Intermediate level, completing numerous practice tests will not be sufficient to reach the Advanced level.

Alex's preparation strategy for achieving a score of 7.5 consisted of two stages:

1. Improving his spoken English in the "Fluent Fast" course for 3 months.

2. Preparing for the exam in the "IELTS YouSkill" course for 3 months.

Let us examine both stages in more detail.

  • The first stage focused on reaching the Advanced level according to international CEFR standards within three months.

Our goal was to complete a year-long program in the "Fluent Fast" course in this time frame. Alex needed to study for 1 to 2 hours each day. This was necessary to cover all the material, attend group and individual lessons, and complete assignments on the educational platform.

The Advanced level significantly differs from all other levels due to its complexity. At this stage, specialized vocabulary and grammar concepts that you have not encountered before come into play.

It is essential to elevate your speaking skills to a completely new level.

The first 2-3 weeks were quite challenging for Alex. He needed time to adjust to the new level and pace of learning. However, the remaining time was spent productively and effectively. He began to grasp more complex grammar, apply vocabulary in practice, and elevate his responses to a whole new level.

For example, during a lesson on travel, he started using idiomatic expressions, collocations, and phrases to enhance the beauty of his speech. Here are some examples of the words he began to incorporate:

  • off the beaten track
  • travel-savvy
  • scenic route
  • cultural immersion
  • to embark on a journey

In the "Fluent Fast" course, we utilize the 7 Repetitions Method. This approach ensures that you do not just learn information but actively use and apply it in your speech.

After just 3 months of leveling up in the "Fluent Fast" course, Alex successfully passed the exam at our school.
He fully mastered the Advanced level and moved on to the next stage of his training.
  • The second stage involved taking the "IELTS YouSkill" course. This course provides a systematic approach to all stages of IELTS preparation. It also includes practice exams after completing each section.

During the IELTS preparation phase, Alex needed to dedicate 1.5 to 2 hours each day. This commitment was essential for mastering the entire program and passing all required exams throughout the course.

Preparing for the IELTS exam is significantly different from learning conversational English. This exam is designed not only to test your knowledge but also to assess your ability to use information quickly.

Throughout the course:

  • We do not simply read texts; we read them under time constraints using specific speed-reading techniques.
  • We do not just listen to audio recordings; we learn to capture information on the first attempt.

Our IELTS preparation course is structured to ensure that you can apply the knowledge you gain in your future life.

  • When studying abroad, skills in speed reading, comprehension, and fluency will be invaluable.
  • When applying for jobs, the skills from the Speaking section and all speaking strategies will be essential.
  • When communicating through writing, the skills we teach in the Writing section will be crucial.

In summary, our course aims to ensure that you not only pass the IELTS but also apply your knowledge and skills to better understand the language and use it effectively.

For example,
in the Reading section, you will study all types of tasks. You will learn how to approach them with maximum efficiency. Additionally, you will complete practice exercises to reinforce the material. Your personal curator will review everything in detail and provide feedback. Afterward, you will take practice tests, known as Mock Exams. These tests are essential for both you and us to ensure that you have grasped the material effectively.

If you require additional practice, we offer extra training exercises to enhance your progress.

Essential Steps Before Taking the IELTS Exam: Important Advice from Alex

Alex successfully completed the IELTS exam according to the regulations, and everything went smoothly. However, he offered a crucial piece of advice for anyone planning to take the exam.

"When you book your exam location, especially if it is in another city or country, make sure to arrive there 2-3 days in advance. Visit the center before the official exam date."

This is necessary for several reasons:

  • First, you need to understand the location. Know how to get there, check for traffic, and estimate how much time to allow for the journey to avoid being late for the exam.

  • Second, familiarize yourself with the entrance. Determine which side the entrance is on, which floor the center is located, and where to go once you arrive.

Many people panic on the day of the test because they:

Miscalculate travel time

Often get lost

Struggle to find the correct building or entrance, especially if there are multiple doors

Mix up the floors

All of these factors can significantly impact your exam performance. They create additional stress when you need maximum concentration.

Therefore, Alex's advice is to visit the center in advance, ideally one day before. Take the time to explore the area thoroughly.
