HOW CATHERINE GOT A JOB AS A FLIGHT ATTENDANT AT EMIRATES THANKS TO HER IELTS CERTIFICATE WITH A SCORE OF 7.0 AND HER PROFESSIONAL SKILLS

A high IELTS score opens doors to new career opportunities. Even though an IELTS certificate is not always a requirement, it is never a waste. It is a valuable addition to your portfolio. Having this certificate shows employers your readiness for an international environment. It also demonstrates your professionalism.

Our student, Catherine, managed to get a job at the prestigious airline Emirates. In this article, we will tell you about her journey to a successful flight attendant career. We will also explain how IELTS played a key role in her achievements.

What goals did Catherine
have when taking the IELTS?

Catherine approached our school with a clear goal: to become a flight attendant at Emirates.

She chose this airline for several reasons:

1. Competitive salary:

Emirates offers attractive pay, including base salary and bonuses.

2.International travel:

There is an opportunity to travel around the world. She can visit different countries and experience new cultures. This makes the job exciting and diverse.

3. Free accommodation:

The company provides free housing in Dubai. This reduces living costs significantly.

4. Bonuses and benefits:

Flight attendants receive various perks, such as medical insurance. They also get discounts on airline tickets for themselves and their families. There are other privileges.

5. Professional development:

Emirates offers training programs. Employees can improve their skills and grow in their careers.

6. Multinational work environment:

Working in an international team with colleagues from different countries promotes cultural exchange. It also broadens your horizons.

7. Flexible work schedule:

Although the job may include night shifts and weekends, many flight attendants value the flexibility. It helps them plan their personal time.

8. Company prestige in your resume:

Experience at a respected airline like Emirates is a big advantage. It shows professionalism and high service standards. This can attract future employers.

These and other benefits make working as a flight attendant at Emirates appealing to many people
who want a career in aviation.

To achieve a leading position among other candidates for the desired role, Catherine started building her portfolio. One of her most important achievements was confirming her English language level.

Interesting fact: There was no official information at Emirates that required proof of English proficiency with an IELTS certificate. The key point was that she needed to have an Advanced level of English. Each person could choose how to confirm this level. Of course, the best way is to take an international exam. The next question is: which exam to choose?

If you want to confirm your English level for a job or education in an international organization, we recommend IELTS. This exam is accepted worldwide and is very reliable.

Catherine’s starting point:
How did her preparation begin?

We always start training with testing the student and creating an individual study plan for the exam.

When Catherine joined our school, her level was Pre-Intermediate. This matched all the characteristics of that level:

Grammar was quite basic

She could use tenses like Present Simple, Present Continuous, prepositions, pronouns, and comparative forms. However, to confirm a higher level like Advanced, more complex structures are needed, such as:

1. Emphasis & Stylistic Devices

2. Advanced Passive Forms

3. Complex Sentence Structures

4. Participle Clauses

5. Complex Reported Speech

- Her vocabulary was also at a basic level

For example, when talking about work, Catherine used standard phrases like:

1. have a meeting

2. answer the phone

3. write emails

4. make a call

5. serve customers

At the Advanced level, you should not only use basic expressions. You also need to incorporate various collocations, set phrases, and idioms to show depth in your speech. For example:

1. Corporate ladder — career progression

2. Subsidiary — a daughter company

3. Branch office — a regional branch

4. Headquarters (HQ) — main office

5. Probation period — trial period

6. Career progression — advancement in your career

7. Promotion / advancement — moving up

8. Lateral move — switching to a similar role in another department

Studying common checklists alone is not enough to demonstrate your English level.
To use more complex vocabulary and structures, you need to do more. You should expand your vocabulary and grammar skills. But that's not enough. You also need to actively use what you learn. Develop your pronunciation and speaking fluency.

- Low fluency level

You cannot truly show your English skills without speaking fluently. You can memorize many words and grammar rules. You can practice alone. But to reach high fluency, you must practice speaking with others.

In our school, Catherine attended both group and individual lessons in the “Fluent Fast” course. Over three months, she fully mastered level 1 of the CEFR standards.

- Her pronunciation was quite good for Pre-Intermediate

But we needed to raise her to three levels higher. This was necessary to show her skills are close to native speakers.

Getting an Advanced level in 9 months is not easy if your current level is Pre-Intermediate. It requires a lot of effort.
Of course, a lot of work is needed.

When we talk about the preparation stages. It is important to remember that you will need to go through three levels:

  • Intermediate,
  • Upper-Intermediate,
  • Advanced,
  • and then prepare for the IELTS exam.

When we set a goal, we always convert it into the required level according to international standards,
based on the "English Levels and IELTS Band Equivalents" chart.

Looking at it, you can see: to achieve a 7.0, an Advanced level is required.

Catherine 's preparation strategy:
How to score high on IELTS?

Our task was challenging: we needed to go through three levels of English and prepare for IELTS in just 9 months.

If we look at the workload in detail, each level covers about 90 topics. So, three levels mean 270 topics. Plus, the direct IELTS preparation involves approximately 100 topics. The total complexity is around 370 topics.

In this way, if you treat this workload as a standard preparation program, you would need 4 years to master it using the classic method with a tutor twice a week.

We didn't have that much time. So, we chose an intensive preparation. We focused on progressing level by level during our immersion courses.

1.   First stage — passing the Intermediate level in the "Fluent Fast" course in 3 months.

2. Second stage — passing the Upper-Intermediate level in the same course in 3 months.

3. Third stage — preparing for the IELTS exam in the "IELTS YouSkill" course in 3 months. This included covering 20 grammar and vocabulary topics from the Advanced level.

This program was non-standard. Standard methods would require a separate Advanced course. But we didn't have three extra months. So, we added 20 key topics from the Advanced level into the IELTS prep course.

By reducing the volume of materials and focusing on the most essential topics, we managed to cover the entire necessary foundation for IELTS. This way, we prepared the student to achieve the required score.

Ideally, the Advanced level should be completed fully in a General English course. But if time is limited, we can take a small risk. Right after mastering Upper-Intermediate, the student can start IELTS preparation with 20 key grammar and vocabulary topics.

The risk is that the probability of passing with the desired score is about 85% when following our method. We informed the student about these risks.
And we decided to proceed this way. As a result, the student scored 7.0.

Here is a detailed description
 of Catherine’s preparation stages

Many mistakenly believe they should start preparing for IELTS immediately. But in 90% of cases, you need to improve your overall English level first.

For Catherine, we created a personalized study plan. We went through several important steps:

1. The first step was mastering the Intermediate level

It may seem surprising, but this is one of the hardest levels to reach. This stage is a big leap from basic knowledge to professional fluency. Difficulty increases in both grammar and vocabulary. You need more than just answering questions. You must form coherent, correct, and convincing speech. Use complex sentence structures confidently.

At this stage, many people face certain difficulties, and we help them overcome these challenges.

The task becomes more difficult when you need to master all 100 intermediate level topics in just three months. Fortunately, our school offers:

  • A convenient educational platform that accelerates your learning many times over.
  • Individual lessons to practice all difficult topics.
  • Group lessons to immerse you in the language environment and help you speak English fluently.

At each stage of preparation, we help our students overcome all obstacles and reach a completely new level.

Catherine showed great enthusiasm for learning. She focused on studying all topics carefully. She completed her homework with special attention. She attended individual lessons to practice all skills. She passed all tests well. She also regularly attended group lessons. These lessons helped her speak without language barriers or shyness.

In our spoken English courses, we train all 7 language skills step by step:

1.   Grammar

2.  Vocabulary
3.  Reading
4.  Listening
5. Speaking
6. Videos with native speakers
7.  Writing

For example, if one module covers words related to describing a house, you will also find lessons with vocabulary, reading, and listening on the same topic.

The method of repeated practice allows you to master the necessary words and use them confidently in your speech.

2. The second stage of preparation is passing the Upper-Intermediate level

After successfully completing the intermediate exam on its topics, we moved to a higher level — Upper-Intermediate.

At this level, we reinforce the knowledge from the previous stage to ensure it is strong. Then, we delve into more complex topics.

3. In conclusion, we faced one of the most challenging stages — preparing for the IELTS exam and studying 20 key topics from the Advanced level

According to Catherine’s individual study plan, and considering the limited time, we decided to go directly from Upper-Intermediate to IELTS preparation.

However, we included an initial review of 20 key grammar and vocabulary topics from the Advanced level in this course.

After covering these 20 Advanced topics, we moved on to actual IELTS preparation. We started with the Listening section, then moved to Reading, Speaking, and Writing.

All tasks in our course are arranged in increasing order of difficulty.
Thus, we place Speaking and Writing at the very end of the preparation. They come last in the course. This allows you to focus more on Listening and Reading first. You will have more time to practice and improve your language skills.

  • In the Listening section, we covered all the necessary listening strategies. This helped our student understand all the important information on the first try.

  • In the Reading section, we practiced various speed-reading techniques. Thanks to this, Catherine was able to read a full text in 20 minutes and answer the questions without mistakes. This way, she stayed well within the 60-minute time limit for this part.

  • In the Speaking section, we provided 20 ready-made strategies for answers. These strategies work for all types of questions. On the exam, you will only need to identify the question type and select the appropriate strategy.

  • In the Writing section, we covered all the types and structures for Writing Part 1 and for Essay Part 2.

Many students find the Writing part difficult. They don’t know how to organize letters and essays properly. Our step-by-step approach to teaching includes writing the main parts, introduction, and conclusion. This helps students confidently express their ideas and organize their thoughts on paper.

Throughout the IELTS preparation course, Catherine took practice exams. This allowed us to monitor her progress and results.

Whenever she faced difficulties, we provided extra materials and practiced additional skills.

In the end, Catherine scored 7.0 on the IELTS exam. We are proud of her inspiring result.

Unexpected difficulties during the exam

Catherine faced some technical issues during her exam. Her headphones disconnected during the Listening section.

During the computer-based IELTS, her headphones broke down and produced no audio, as did those of the girl sitting next to her. The neighboring student panicked, called for help loudly, and caused noise. This disrupted the exam rules. As a result, she was removed from the room and couldn’t finish the exam.

The IELTS rules do not allow noise during the test. Even technical problems that cause noise lead to immediate removal and result cancellation.

Unlike the neighboring student, Catherine knew about unexpected situations at the exam. This is also covered in our course. Instead of panicking, she raised her hand to get attention. After a technician stopped the audio, her headphones were fixed. She was able to continue her exam.

Thanks to her calm reaction and knowledge, Catherine overcame the technical issue. She continued her exam and avoided having her results canceled.

So, the most important thing to remember is: in any unusual situation, stay calm. If technical problems occur, raise your hand. Staff will come and help you.

If the headphones don’t work at all, you might be offered to take the exam another day. In any case, the test center must take steps to solve the problem.

This case shows how important it is to prepare for unexpected situations, including technical issues, during the exam.
